What to expect
Some upload forms, older word processors and specialist systems still ask for RTF. It's one of the most widely readable formatted-text formats, supported for decades on every operating system.
Fonts, bold and italic, paragraph alignment, lists and simple tables survive the trip. Advanced Word features such as content controls, SmartArt and complex text wrapping have no RTF equivalent and are simplified.
RTF files can be larger than DOCX because they aren't compressed. That's normal.
Headers, footers, footnotes and page numbers are kept. Images are embedded in the RTF so the file is self-contained. If the program you're sending to struggles with images, remove them in Word first to get a text-only RTF that any editor can open.
