What to expect
Many universities, public agencies and open-source projects require documents in an open, royalty-free format. ODT is an ISO standard and opens natively in LibreOffice and OpenOffice, which are free on every operating system.
Text, styles, headings, tables, images, footnotes, headers and footers are converted to their OpenDocument equivalents. Word-only features such as some SmartArt and content controls are simplified.
ODT files also open in Word, Google Docs and Pages.
Tracked changes and comments are converted too, so review history isn't lost when you move a document into LibreOffice. Page setup, margins, columns and section breaks carry over, and embedded images stay inside the file. Charts made in Word are converted to LibreOffice charts where possible.
