What to expect
Most oversized PDFs are big because of photos and scans stored at far higher resolution than anyone needs. Compression resamples images to about 150 DPI, which looks sharp on screens and prints well at normal sizes, and removes duplicate and unused data.
Text and vector graphics aren't turned into images, so they stay crisp and selectable. Files that are already optimized, or contain mostly text, may shrink only a little.
Scans and photo-heavy documents usually benefit the most. If you need an even smaller file, split it or remove pages you don't need first.
