Microsoft PowerPoint presentation (PPTX)
What is a PPTX file?
PPTX is the presentation format used by Microsoft PowerPoint since 2007. Each file holds slides with text, images, charts, video, animations and speaker notes. Keynote, Google Slides and LibreOffice Impress can all open it, though complex animations and custom fonts don't always survive the trip.
How to open a PPTX file
- Windows
- Open it in PowerPoint, or free in PowerPoint for the web at office.com in any browser.
- Mac
- Double-click to open in Keynote, which comes with every Mac, or in PowerPoint if you have it.
- iPhone
- Preview it in Files or Mail, or present and edit it with the Keynote or PowerPoint app.

Good for
- Animations, transitions and speaker notes
- Widely supported for presenting
- Slides stay editable for the next version
Watch out for

- Awkward to read on a phone
PPTX file questions
What's the best way to share slides by email?
Convert the deck to PDF. It's smaller, opens on every device, and keeps your fonts and layout exactly as designed.
Will animations work in a PDF?
No. A PDF shows each slide in its final, fully built state, which is usually what readers want anyway.
Can I open PPTX files in Google Slides?
Yes. Upload the file to Google Drive and open it with Google Slides to view or edit it.
