What is a HTML file?
HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the language every web page is written in. An HTML file on your device is usually a saved web page, an exported email, documentation, or a report generated by software. It describes headings, paragraphs, links, tables and images, and your browser turns that description into the page you see.
How to open a HTML file
- Windows
- Double-click it to open in Microsoft Edge or whichever browser is your default.
- Mac
- Double-click it to open in Safari; hold Option and choose Open With to use another browser.
- iPhone
- Tap it in the Files app to preview it, or share it to Safari to view it as a web page.
- Android
- Open it from Files by Google and choose Chrome to view it like a web page.
Good for
- Opens in every web browser
- Keeps links clickable
- Easy to read and edit as text
Watch out for
- Images and styles may be missing if they weren't saved alongside
- Looks different on different screens
- Not a good format for sending a final document

Why does my saved web page look broken?
The HTML file often refers to images and style sheets that weren't saved with it. Converting to PDF captures what the file contains.
How do I turn an HTML file into a document?
Convert it to PDF. You get fixed pages that print well and open the same way everywhere.
Can I convert a live website by its address?
This converts HTML files you already have. For a live page, your browser's Print menu can save it as PDF.
